Joy Jongmin KIM (b. 1991, Korea) is a multimedia artist whose works gather inspiration from numerous spaces, experiences and themes. Kim’s pieces capture the essence of both street and fine art, valuing both as symbolic representations of the contemporary art scene.

Kim was recognized for his cartoon drawings as a child, propelling him towards a future in art. As a teenager, he was particularly influenced by African-American street art symbolized by hip-hop. In recent years, Kim’s artistic process was influenced by his time spent working for interior design companies, creating video art, studying tattooing and opening a clothing store. All of these experiences have led Kim to his current body of work, where he acknowledges that all art forms possess their own agency and value.

Set against a backdrop of red, Kim’s figurative sketches eloquently emerge from their crimson surroundings. Our eyes are unable to turn from their mixture of bold and thin lines, streaks of color, and finely detailed features. One can locate the artist’s appreciation for both graffiti and fine art in this series, making it a representative piece of his process.

Joy Jongmin Kim was born in Korea in 1991. He was a BFA Candidate for the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has held two solo exhibitions in the Ventures Gallery (San Francisco) and Space 776 gallery (New York) in 2017 and 2018, respectively. His works have been featured in group exhibitions since 2016 across the United States in galleries such as the Contempop Gallery Tribeca (New York), Space 776 gallery (Miami), and SAND Gallery (Baltimore) amongst others. He currently divides his time between New York and Seoul.
