ZAUN LEE creates paintings, drawings, and installations based on grids. LEE considers the grid to be a visualization of logic, and applies a logical system to the practice of visual art. The grid is a practical tool that has efficiently shaped contemporary society in physical and symbolic ways. By manipulating, reducing or expanding grid units, LEE asks the question of how this mathematic system of division and segmentation of grids can simultaneously be a functional system of connection and unity when it embraces individualization, differentiation, multiplicity, and divergence. ZAUN LEE presents philosophical questions of existentialism and phenomenology and visually interprets theories of postmodern epistemology and linguistics.
ZAUN LEE attended Seoul National University and graduated BA in Philosophy from Alfred University. Since 2009, She was featured in exhibitions throughout the United States,South Korea, and Europe including solo exhibitions, “No Man’s Land,” Rotary Ice House Gallery, Monmouth University, NJ, 2013;”Borders,” Art Mora, New York, 2013; and group exhibitions at New York Foundation for Arts, New York; Cindy Rucker Gallery, New York; Longwood Art Gallery, the Bronx Council; Chungdam Art Center, Seoul, Korea; a Collateral Event of the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. She participated in Artist-in-Residence programs at International Artist Exchange Program in New Rochelle, NY as well as at Art Mora gallery, New York, NY, both in 2014. She was a Van Lier Fellowship Mentor for NYFA mentoring program at New York Foundation for Arts, Brooklyn, NY, in 2013. She was the finalist for the proposal for an exhibition by No Longer Empty entitled “About Face,” for its participation in the New Museum’s “Festival of Ideas for A New City,” in 2011. She contributed a Korean translation of Jürgen Habermas’, “Modernity – An Incomplete Project,” to the Tuning section of the 2011 Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale in Korea. She was a recipient of the 5th AHL foundation Visual Arts Award and Grant in 2008 and a nominee for the 8th Kumho Young Artist Award at the Kumho Museum of Art. Her solo exhibition in 2013 was reviewed by Jonathan Goodman from The Brooklyn Rail.
