Zu Do YANG
(b. 1976, Korea)
Professor in Dongguk University, Seoul
Zu’s photographs are taken with his whole body, an act he considers to be equal to seeing. In latin, ‘seeing’ (voir) is similar to the word of ‘knowing’ (savoir), implying that the two are equal. While the objects that Zu photographs are not fixed or complete, the artist knows that both the past and the future will affect them. His artwork aims to express that the world around us cannot accurately be represented or depicted even in a photograph. In classical Chinese thought, the sky was considered to be round and the Earth was square. This idea of there being another world, an imaginary world, inspired Zu on his quest to show it. His photographs thereby look at the world in both the most familiar ways and through hidden narratives and angles.

Zu was born in Korea in 1976. Zu obtained his BFA and MFA from Dongguk University in 2000 and 2003, respectively. His artwork has been featured in solo shows across Korea since 2002. His works have been featured in group exhibitions since 2000 around Korea, with international shows at Brooklyn Bridge Park (New York), Keumsan Gallery (Hong Kong), Le Meridien Noumea (New Caledonia), Exchange Square (Hong Kong), Marina Bay Sands (Singapore), Korean Culture Office (Sydney, Australia), Grand Hyatt Hotel (Hong Kong), Korean Culture Service NY (New York), Lincoln Center Damrosch Park (New York), La Venue Terminal Stores (New York), 798 SPACE (Beijing), Suntec Singapore Hall (Singapore), and UM Gallery (Tokyo). His work is a part of four public collections across Korea and France.

"The sky is round and ground is square(天圓地方)." It means a world view of old Chinese in of country Jin. Spaces they belong to is another world. There is an around world, a their imaginary world to any one. To show it, it presents shaking world movement and a visional coming world. It shows us a world we are not able to see by presenting a hidden world as well as a faced one... – Zu Do Yang’s Two eyes world seen with a eye
