Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY

Zaun LEE (b. Korea) creates drawings, paintings and installations based on grids and blueprints. This inspiration comes from Lee’s desire to apply a logical system to visual art; she considers the grid a practical tool that has shaped our society in both physical and symbolic ways.

Lee expands, reduces or manipulates the grid in order to raise questions towards mathematical systems of division and their imperfections. How can grids act as a functional system of connection while meanwhile embracing the multiplicity and individuality in our everyday lives? When they are altered to the world around us, blueprints struggle to express our alienation from and closeness to one another. As a viewer, we have both an outside and inside perspective of these macroscopic city views. Lee’s artwork thus questions the spaces that become both philosophical and existential in nature.

Zaun Lee was born in Korea. She attended Seoul National University and graduated with a BA in Philosophy from Alfred University in New York. She has held three solo exhibitions in New York, New Jersey and Seoul since 2013. Since 2008, Lee was featured in group exhibitions throughout the United States, Korea, and Europe including the 55th Venice Biennale and the Royal Society of American Art. She currently lives and works in New York.
