Hyelim CHA
(b. 1979, Korea)
Hyelim CHA began her artistic career as a painter but gradually expanded her skills to become a multimedia artist. The artist felt that the flatness of a painting was not suitable for expressing emotion, and was inspired by the flaws and stories that lingered in the physical exhibition space.

Cha is interested in the empty spaces in our everyday lives, such as those between the camera lens and the target. She feels that these areas possess a scenic beauty where stories are kept. Her paintings create a narrative with repeated characters: directors, sympathizers, and actors. Cha also draws inspiration from the media, particularly internet news articles and images, weaving them together to create a singular tale. In essence, Cha’s works ask the audience to participate in imagining and creating their own stories. She emphasizes the power of the individual mind and presents this through her body of work.

Hyelim Cha was born in Korea in 1979. In 2006, she received her BFA in Media Art from the Kaywon School of Art and Design in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Since then, she has held ten solo exhibitions in Seoul and Berlin. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in countries such as Korea, Germany, Japan, USA, Indonesia. Notable museums and galleries include the Markisches Museum (Berlin), PS 35 Gallery (New York), SOMA Museum of Art (Seoul), Gyeonggi Museum of Modern ARt (Gyeonggi-do, Korea), Hangaram Art Museum (Seoul), Ilmin Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul), and the Total Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul).
