Shin’s sculptural works are inspired by his general feelings and thoughts, albeit ones that have been dulled by mundane, daily routines. These emotions also stretch towards the artist’s imagination, where he offers a dreamlike narrative to representations of the everyday. By expressing these concepts within his work, Shin redefines our understanding of the ‘self’. In this way, his works portray the mental landscapes of the conscious and unconscious, akin to the relationship between memories and dreams.
Gunwoo Shin was born in 1978 in Seoul, Korea, where he currently lives and works. He received his BFA in Sculpture from Seoul National University in 2003, where he later continued his studies to obtain a subsequent MFA in 2006. In 2007, Shin relocated to London to obtain his MFA in Sculpture from the Slade School of Fine Art. His inaugural solo exhibition was held in 2006 at the Kwanhoon Gallery in Seoul, followed by several other solo exhibitions within Seoul and New York, such as the Shin Gallery (NYC) and Gallery Hyundai (Seoul). Amongst an array of group exhibitions held since 2008, Shin has presented works in renowned galleries such as the Oxo Centre (London), La cave (Geneva), and Project space Sarubia (Seoul). In 2009 he won the Land Securities Award.
